A request from retail developer Vestar to nix 50 acres of commercial zoning in south Gilbert failed to win support from the Town Council this week, with the panel postponing a vote on the item until March.
Vestar, the company behind large-scale Valley shopping centers such as Tempe Marketplace, wants to replace plans for a “power center” at the southwestern corner of Higley and Riggs roads with about 100 new homes.
Vestar’s original vision for Greer Towne Center included two major anchor tenants flanked by several smaller shops and nine stand-alone “pad” sites, which often develop as restaurants or banks.
