Sun City West board backs domestic partners measure

A domestic-partners proposal was passed and adopted by the Fire District of Sun City West Board of Directors.

The measure, adopted at a special meeting in mid October, saw three of the board members either abstaining or not present for the vote.

Director Bill Hamel was absent from the meeting at fire district headquarters, 18818 N. Spanish Garden Drive. Director Dusty Rhodes was in attendance at the start of the meeting, but left before the vote was taken. Jack Meyer participated in the meeting by phone, but cited uncertainty about the issue and abstained from voting.

As a result, the domestic partners proposal passed 2-0 with directors David Wilson and Russell “Smitty” Smith casting “yes” votes. It was not immediately clear how a 5-member panel could pass an issue with less than a majority of members present.
