New business and housing developments are on the rise in Tempe. Along with them, city sales-tax revenue is climbing to levels not seen since before the recession.
Still, reinstating community services trimmed during the economic downturn is not yet on the horizon.
Tempe Finance Director Ken Jones said that inflation, an unstable economy and the looming expiration of the city’s temporary sales-tax increase are among financial factors limiting an expansion of services.
Tempe will be closer to a full recovery “when our revenues are at the same percentage of our expenditures, but our expenditures are going up and the revenues are just now reaching the levels they were then (before the recession),” Jones said.
