Rose Law Group Gripe of the Week
This writer joined a fraternity as a university freshman. It was the thing to do at the time. Membership carried a lot of benefits, chiefly among them personal growth and maturity.
Over the years, fraternity membership has dwindled. It is no longer prestigious or beneficial. Not at Arizona State University for sure, where numerous infantile, gross and irresponsible behavior has pinned a sour reputation on the school in the national media.
As The Arizona Republic reported, a Martin Luther King Jr.-themed party at ASU raised the specter of racism and led to a threat of a boycott from the African-American community.
Local civil rights leaders want the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity expelled from the university for what they say is a history of racial incidents. (Ironically, TKE at this writer’s school was composed of Asian members.)
The latest involved images on social media of partygoers wearing stereotypical hip-hop clothes. They appear to flash gang signs and use hashtags such as “blackoutformlk” and “ihaveadream.” The photos show people wearing saggy pants and posing with hollowed- out watermelon cups.
There should be less than zero tolerance of such braternity behavior. The message should be “See ya later, boys, go home to mommy and daddy and don’t let your lack of an education hit you in the ass on your way out of the door.”
