Avondale city managerCATHEDRAL CITY — Charles “Charlie” McClendon is set to become the next city manager here after the City Council on Wednesday, in a 5-0 vote, approved an annual contract for him worth more than $192,000.

City Councilman Stan Henry, who made a two-day trip to Avondale, Ariz., with Mayor Kathy DeRosa to visit the city where McClendon currently is manager, noted the two cities are quite similar in makeup.

“I think he’ll bring a lot expertise and the things they’ve done to Cathedral City,” Henry said.

Avondale Mayor Mary Lopez Rogers said she was sorry to see McClendon go, but believes Avondale is in a good place to move on, with its staff of 400 serving a population of 80,000.
