Robert Shelton abruptly resigned Monday as executive director of the Fiesta Bowl to become president of Tucson-based Research Corporation for Science Advancement.
Shelton, a former University of Arizona president who resurrected the tarnished bowl’s image, told The Arizona Republic Tuesday that it was a “mutual” decision to leave. He acknowledged, however, that some board members a few months ago approached him about whether it was “time to move on.”
“The board and I are in agreement on this,” Shelton said. “The issue was what profile should the organization have going into the College Football Playoff era, and they wanted to put a lot of emphasis on marketing.”
