Gilbert officials are considering tighter restrictions for developers who want to build apartment complexes in commercial-zoning areas as demand continues to rise for more multifamily housing projects.
The new regulations would give the Gilbert Town Council and Planning Commission greater flexibility in evaluating proposed apartment complexes, allowing officials to reject the plans if they don’t meet specific standards.
The proposal comes as several new complexes have opened or begun development in Gilbert over the past few years, leaving fewer acres available with zoning in place for multifamily residential, including townhomes, apartments and condos.
