Glendale’s temporary city sales tax hike might stay longer

Glendale’s temporary city sales tax increase may not expire in 2017 as leaders had said.

The city council implemented the 0.7 percentage-point city sales tax increase in 2012 to avoid massive budget cuts, from closing libraries to laying off nearly a quarter of city workers.

During a budget meeting Jan. 21, a council majority said they would support keeping the increase, which brings in about $25 million annually.

Financial Services Director Tom Duensing painted a grim forecast, showing the city would eat through its reserves by the end of next fiscal year and face

ever-increasing budget shortfalls unless the city cuts costs and increases revenues. Even with the current city sales tax rate in place, he predicts a $27 million deficit in fiscal 2016-17.
