A proposed WinCo grocery store that has spurred two lawsuits against Surprise got approval for a liquor license.
The liquor license will not impact the zoning issues that sparked the legal fight. The license will only be valid if a WinCo store is built on a proposed location on Bell Road near Loop 303, said Surprise City Attorney Misty Leslie.
The council voted 6-0, Tuesday, Jan. 14. to approve the license with those conditions.
“Based on the fact that this is simply a liquor license and it is unrelated to specific land use, I move to approve the liquor license,” Councilman John Williams said.
City leaders have repeatedly declined to comment about the WinCo issue because there is pending litigation.
