Phoenix helps breathe new life into old buildings

The number of projects that involve renovating buildings and turning them into new spaces has climbed steadily since the city started its adaptive-reuse program in 2008.

The number of projects has grown from 17 during the program’s first full year to 48 in 2013.

City officials work with business owners and architects to provide development guidance, streamline the process, reduce the time frame and offer cost savings, according to the Phoenix website.

Now the city has amped up its incentives even more. In July 2013, Phoenix began offering up to $4,500 in construction-plan review and permit-fee waivers for eligible projects. So far, eight projects have taken advantage, totaling $21,600, according to the city.
