Arizona’s legislative sessions, which routinely run far past the 100-day mark, sometimes make a mockery of the term “part-time legislature,” and some of the state’s most influential business groups are looking to change that.
At least three lawmakers are pushing legislation this year that would definitively set the length of Arizona’s legislative sessions. Senate Majority Leader John McComish, who has worked closely with the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other groups on his proposal, wants to limit legislative sessions to 100 days. Rep. J.D. Mesnard has a bill calling for the Legislature to adjourn each year by May 1. And Rep. Jeff Dial wants sessions to begin in February and be limited to a lean 45 days.
