With Council member Micah Powell absent, and Council members Etta Ruth Amerson and J.W. Tidwell voting no at its January 27 Regular Meeting, the Eloy City Council was still able to reduce the tax on food for home consumption from 3 percent to zero. Mayor Joe Nagy, Council members Augustine Sauceda, Belinda Akes, and Vice Mayor Joel Belloc all gave a thumbs-up to the tax reduction. The ordinance was adopted and the change will be effective at the start of the next fiscal year on July 1, 2014.
Council member Amerson said she was in favor of lowering the tax, but “wanted to stand behind the staff,” who had recommended that council lower it in increments. As for reducing taxes on food in Eloy, Council member Akes pointed out that while it is difficult to reduce tax, the city needs to be able to compete with other area cities.
