After months of public dialogue and debate about the financial impact of allowing billboards in the Palm Canyon Business Park, the Glendale Planning Commission voted down a request from Becker Boards to erect two static billboards on the site.
The issue now goes to city council Feb. 25 for final approval or denial.
“The staff recommendation is for denial to allow two static billboards,” said Glendale Planning Director Jon Froke. “This is the first time in over 10 years that we have requested denial of a request.”
The billboards would have been built near Loop 101 and Bell Road in an area that is now mostly residential and does not currently have any billboards.
Becker Boards LLC wanted to erect two 85-foot high poster billboards north of Bell on the west side of the freeway.
Mark Becker, owner of Becker Boards, was visibly upset, but vowed to press on.
“My next step is the city council meeting on Feb. 25,” he said. “I will be there and try again and see if we can get approval.”
Councilmember Gary Sherwood, who attended the meeting, said council will take the issue up at the Feb. 25 meeting.
