Scottsdale’s former city treasurer will provide a deposition in a lawsuit filed against the city in which he is expected to testify that he opposed the city’s $2 million contribution toward improvements at the McDowell Mountain Golf Club.
David Smith, who retired as treasurer last year, confirmed to The Arizona Republic that he will give a deposition in the case that accuses Scottsdale of illegally subsidizing improvements at the north Scottsdale golf course, which is managed by a group that includes PGA tour pro Phil Mickelson.
The plaintiffs subpoenaed Smith and he said he has no reason to fight the deposition.
In a 2012 report, Smith recommended that the course operator, White Buffalo Golf LLC, pay for the improvements, as outlined in a prior deal.
Despite his recommendation, Scottsdale chose to take on debt to bankroll the improvements.
