Chandler and Tempe want to ease the headaches and government red tape that their residents say they face when trying to remodel their homes or upgrade their properties.
Many Chandler and Tempe homes built in the 1960s and 1970s do not have 21st-century amenities, and some are falling into disrepair.
It benefits cities that are attempting to keep neighborhoods appealing and crime free to encourage homeowners to update their homes, Southeast Valley civic leaders said. The goal in Tempe and Chandler is to develop programs that help homeowners navigate the planning and development process.
Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny said he has heard from overwhelmed residents who want to invest in their homes but do not know where to start.
