Again, no vote on Gilbert ‘power center’ changes

The Town Council again has delayed a vote on a developer’s request to abandon plans for a regional shopping center in south Gilbert as neighbors continue to mobilize against its proposed replacement, housing.

Vestar, the company behind large-scale Valley shopping centers such as Tempe Marketplace, wants to replace plans for a “power center” at the southwestern corner of Higley and Riggs roads with about 100 new homes.

The council first reviewed the proposed major General Plan amendment in December but pushed the item to March for further study. Last month, it decided to move the item up to its Feb. 13 council meeting.
