Nine horses were seized from a Buckeye woman’s property on Wednesday after the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous letter about possible animal abuse, authorities said.

Deputies investigated the letter’s allegations Tuesday afternoon and decided a search warrant was necessary, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Brandon Jones said.

Early Wednesday morning, deputies arrived at 59-year-old Denise Denny’s home in the 29000 block of Polk Street and found 11 horses, 13 dogs and one goat, Jones said.

Nine of the horses were seized because of malnutrition and taken to the Durango Equine Veterinary Clinic in Buckeye for rehabilitation. It took four trips to transfer the horses to the center.
