About 40 AARP members from the southeast Valley on Tuesday protested a water-rate hike that will have them paying the income tax expenses for the owners of Pima Utility Co.
Pima is a small water and wastewater utility serving about 10,000 homes in Sun Lakes in the southeast Valley.
Last year, the five Arizona Corporation Commissioners allowed the owners of small water companies organized as S corporations to charge their customers for the income-tax expense they incur through the company. In the case of Pima, that is primarily developer Ed Robson’s family trust that gets the tax liability of the utility and will shift that liability to utility customers.
