A proposed zoning change that would replace 20 acres of vacant industrial property in Gilbert with an apartment complex drew a lackluster response from the Planning Commission this week as officials worried over a potential loss of employment space.
Gilbert developer Jason Barney wants to build about 300 apartments on land owned by Circle G near Power and Ray roads in a district that the town considers one of its key employment corridors.
The apartment complex would be part of a larger master plan for about 41 acres that includes a scaled-back industrial component along with commercial zoning that could produce retail shops and services.
