A group of Somerton residents is opposing a request by the Cocopah Indian Tribe for a land use change that would allow housing on 17 acres of nearby farmland next to the tribe’s Rio Colorado Golf Course.
Residents of the nearby Dove Valley Estates subdivision fear the project would cause traffic problems in the area and strain the city’s sewer system, but the Somerton City Council this week gave preliminary approval to an amendment to the city’s general plan that would allow low- and medium-density housing on land now zoned for agricultural use.
Opposition to the land use change surfaced after the city’s planning and zoning commission recommended approval of the request, and about a dozen Dove Valley Estates residents turned at this week’s council meeting for the first reading of the general plan amendment.
