Turning reclaimed sewer discharge into drinkable tap water, manipulating clouds to engineer rain and importing desalinized water from Mexico and California are some of the strategies pegged by the Arizona Department of Water Resources as possible solutions to prevent a potential 3 million acre foot water shortage for the state in the next century.
“The state is not facing a water crisis today, but we do have some issues,” ADWR Director Mike Lacey told the Pinal Groundwater Users Advisory Council Thursday.
Lacey discussed the state’s comprehensive water supply and demand analysis, Arizona’s Next Century, A Strategic Vision for Water Supply Sustainability — a 300-page report that identifies potential strategies to correct projected shortages and keep water flowing to users in various parts of the state.
