Two of the outsiders hoping to land positions on the Salt River Project board of directors are spending tens of thousands of dollars in a political race where candidates usually spend a few hundred dollars and get fewer than 1,000 votes
One of the candidates raised more than $5,000 from the parent company of Arizona Public Service Co. and two of its executives, while another is spending $20,000 of his own cash on the race.
SRP is a non-profit subdivision of the state, and people who own land in the utility territory elect its president, vice president, and 14 board members who make decisions ranging from the rates for electricity to the types of power plants the company builds.
