The Casa Grande City Council on Monday approved a new set of building codes, updating a six- year-old document.
“The city has been working under the 2003 building codes since they were adopted in 2008,” said Dwight Williams, chief building official for the city.
State laws prohibited the city from adopting updated codes for several years, but that limitation has now been lifted, he said.
“City staff and the Board of Appeals are recommending that the city adopt the most current 2012 versions of the (International Code Council) codes,” Williams said.
The city’s Board of Appeals spent 18 months analyzing the new codes and several public hearings were held.
“A lot of work went into this,” Councilwoman Mary Kortsen said.
Approved were the International Code Council codes and local amendments of the Casa Grande Building and Technical Administrative Code regulating residential, building, fire, elec- tric, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas, energy and property maintenance applications.
