A citizens’ committee wants to block a zoning change for the planned Riverwalk housing development in Peoria

riverwalk-img3A group of residents filed about 4,700 signatures March 26 for a referendum on a zoning ordinance the Peoria City Council passed in February that would move forward the planned Riverwalk housing development near Pinnacle Peak Road and 77th Avenue.

The council voted to amend the General Plan and change the zoning to decrease the lot sizes. Citizens’ committee chairman Steven Campbell said the new lot sizes are “horribly inconsistent with the existing zoning and lot size of the surrounding area.”

The City Clerk’s Office and Maricopa County Recorder’s Office have until mid-May to verify there are at least 2,434 valid signatures. If so, the referendum will be placed on the ballot.
