In a March 19 letter the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Arizona’s “fall protection” standard doesn’t go far enough to protect workers’ safety, and the agency threatened to take over the state’s authority to regulate construction safety if it doesn’t strengthen the standard in accordance with federal guidelines.
OSHA gave the Industrial Commission of Arizona until April 18 to respond. The Commission, defends its standard and is hoping for a 45-day requested extension.
U.S. Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake asked OSHA on April 1 to hold off on taking any action until Arizona lawmakers pass Senate Bill 1307, which is on its way back to the Senate after unanimously passing a third read in the House of Representatives.
