There’s a group of people in Phoenix and Tempe with a big circle around May 1. Over in Scottsdale, where the i’s are dotted and the t’s crossed, it’s a “task completed” mark on the calendar. The deadline: complete the Google Fiber-Ready City Checklist to see if the three Arizona cities will be among the next 34 to offer Google gigafiber Internet service to residents.
It’s not a competition from Google. A company spokesperson, speaking on background, told AZBEX that Google could end up installing fiber in all 34 cities. The selected markets are based on whether a city is fiber ready. Each of the cities must turn in responses to Google’s checklist by May Day.
Scottsdale planned to submit its responses Tuesday. Tempe says it’s confident that it will meet the May 1 deadline. Phoenix said more than 60 people were involved in wrapping up its application, which is now complete.
