KFNN-AM 1510 Money Radio is celebrating 25 years on the air.
Several people told founder and CEO Ron Cohen he would fail when he started the finance-focused Phoenix station in 1989. He not only has kept it going for a quarter-century, but also acquired a FM station, started an annual event and expanded into California along the way.
“Everybody said it wouldn’t work, but by then I was already committed to doing it. And they were right — it didn’t work,” he said. “It took a long time for it to start catching on, but I stuck with it.”
Cohen was pursuing a career in commercial real estate in the 1980s, but those jobs dried up during the savings and loan crisis. He had an opportunity to buy a small radio station for $300,000 and decided to do it.
