A reporter from The Arizona Republic was turned away at the door of the”Open Mic Forum” for Republican gubernatorial candidates Thursday night at a Gilbert high school as organizers, two East Valley GOP committees, closed the event to the public.

Republican candidates in attendance included Secretary of State Ken Bennett, State Treasurer Doug Ducey, state Sen. Al Melvin, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith, attorney Christine Jones and former U.S. Rep. Frank Riggs.

Ducey’s campaign tweeted “we didn’t set the rules.”

Statement by Phil Riske, managing editor | Rose Law Group Reporter:

“What happened in Gilbert is totally unacceptable. The public deserves to know what these candidates say at all times. They should have refused to participate when the forum was closed to the public.”
