Peoria councilwoman to resign seat to run for mayor

Peoria Councilwoman Cathy Carlat will resign her seat in the Mesquite District to run for mayor.

Her resignation means her council seat will be up for election this year, joining those for the mayor, Acacia, Palo Verde and Pine districts that also will be on the ballot. The election could create substantial turnover on the seven-member council.

Carlat, who voters elected in 2005 and is serving her third term, said she wants to focus on creating jobs, keeping taxes low and protecting existing neighborhoods from the impacts of new development. She pointed to the recent opening of a new road along the Agua Fria River to reroute gravel trucks away from the Ventana Lakes retirement community as an example.
