Hundreds Of Solar Seniors Rally At State Capitol June 4th To Protest New Property Tax On The Sun
(PHOENIX) On Wednesday June 4th, 10am at the Arizona State Capitol the sun will rise on another solar rally. The Arizona Department of Revenue intends to impose a new solar property tax on leased rooftop solar systems. Because senior citizens, particularly in Sun City and Sun City West, tend to be some of the most loyal solar customers, they will be leading a protest at the Senate Lawn of the Arizona State Capitol.
The featured speaker will be Barry Goldwater Jr., Co-Chairman of TUSK, which stands for Tell Utilities Solar won’t be Killed. He will be joined by representatives of the rooftop solar industry and scores of seniors who would be unfairly burdened by this new tax which was imposed without a public vote or vote from the legislature.
Entertainment will be provided by The Sun City Poms and DJ Mr. P-Body.
The tax was imposed following lobbying efforts by Arizona Public Service. Attendees will be asking Arizona Governor Jan Brewer to do the right thing and instruct the Arizona Department of Revenue to get this unfair tax off the books.
TUSK America was formed to stand up for energy choice and solar savings. TUSK’s Co-Chairman is Barry Goldwater Jr. “This solar tax is bad for energy choice, it’s bad for free markets, and it’s bad for our state’s economy. Our state should be embracing rooftop solar power, not finding new ways to tax it,” Goldwater said.

T.U.S.K. believes that rooftop solar is similar to a charter school—it provides a competitive alternative to the monopoly. Monopoly utilities aren’t known for reducing costs or for driving business innovation, but the solar industry is. Solar companies have a track record of aggressive cost reduction. The more people use rooftop solar, the less power they need to buy from the utilities. Energy independence means smaller profits for the utilities, so they are doing everything they can to stop the spread of independent solar.
