Mayor of Arizona town of Hayden pleads guilty

The mayor of the town of Hayden pleaded guilty last week to covering up for an $850 theft by offering up a stolen chainsaw as evidence that the missing funds were well spent, Pinal County Attorney officials announced Friday.

Charles Vega, 38, was arrested in February of 2013 after officials from the town of Hayden noticed that $850 raised in a fundraiser for the Hayden Fire Department was missing, Pinal County Attorney’s Office spokesman Jim Knupp said.

At the time, Vega was the fire chief in the town, Knupp said.
