Mesa will have contested mayoral election

Clifford Daniel “Danny” Ray, a Mesa contractor, filed on April 28 as a candidate in the special mayoral election, joining former Vice Mayor John Giles in the race.

The winner will replace Mayor Alex Finter as soon as the election results are certified and fill the remaining term of Scott Smith, who resigned this month to run for governor.

That term ends in January 2017. The winner of this year’s election would be eligible for up to two consecutive four-year terms thereafter.
