Millions at stake as Coolidge voters decide on home rule

City council and mayor seats will not be the only items on the ballot during the Aug. 26 primary ballot. Also at issue is a financial clause that if rejected would prevent the city from spending millions of dollars that they have been able to spend for decades.

Every four years, voters in every city and town must vote on what is knows as a home rule option. Home rule allows a city or town to spend above the amount of expenditures budgeted for them by the state government. Home rule first passed in Coolidge in 1982 and has been passed every four years ever since.

Lisa Pannella, the finance director for the city, presented information during two public hearings that have taken place during the past two city council meetings. There were no comments from the public during these hearings, only a question from Chamber of Commerce Director Lynn Parsons asking for clarification about the ramifications should home rule fail during the Aug. 26 vote.
