Early returns in Tuesday’s special election show Tempe voters are backing a General Plan update that paves the way for an urban city with high-density development and an emphasis on transportation alternatives to motor vehicles.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting, and a portion of the early ballots counted, the city’s General Plan 2040 has 57 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results Tuesday from the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office.
The proposed General Plan had generated debate that centered on density in the landlocked city. Some residents worried that the blueprint for growth and development could lead to an abundance of high-rises and narrowed streets to allow for more bike lanes and pedestrian walkways. Others believe Tempe’s future depends on high-density projects and growth.
