Yuma board nixes proposed property tax boost

Facing backlash from taxpayers for suggesting a property tax levy increase last week, Vice Chairman Russell McCloud reluctantly backtracked during Monday’s Yuma County Board of Supervisors meeting.

In discussing the 2014-2015 tentative budget, McCloud had suggested the county collect $500,000 more in property taxes to reverse a downward trend in the county’s cash reserves. However, Chairman Greg Ferguson strongly opposed the proposal, saying it makes no sense to take more money from taxpayers’ pockets “to be put into the bank.”
