Anyone who looks at plans evolving for Interstate 11 and says, “It’s just going to save an hour getting to Vegas,” is not looking at Arizona’s long-term economic development. Interstate highways have always been built in segments, but planned to connect markets. I-11 is no exception, and its importance to the state’s future is obvious.
“Arizona has no high-speed connection to its major trading partners, Mexico and Canada,” says Joseph La Rue, a member of the Arizona State Transportation Board. The STB has been a major advocate of I-11, and authorized the Arizona Department of Transportation to join with its Nevada counterpart to plan the first segment: Phoenix to Las Vegas.
