Resident files complaint on Peoria’s ‘secret ballot’

Julia Smock, a Peoria resident and a retired attorney, filed an open meeting complaint against the City of Peoria regarding its decision to have secret ballots to determine who will be appointed to fill the vacancy in the Mesquite Council District. Smock filed the complaint May 29 with the Arizona Attorney General’s office.

At its May 20 regular meeting, council addressed a proposed amendment to council policy on voting for replacements for councilmember vacancies. The subject policy change was brought forth by City Attorney Steve Kemp, who talked with the Arizona Attorney General’s office about the policy’s possible violation of state law.
