When the housing bubble burst, several million Americans went from being owners to renters. That trend is having repercussions, mainly negative ones, according to a new report that argues renters struggle more financially than homeowners.
“We are in a new phase of the housing crisis,” said Rachel Laforest, executive director of the Right to the City Alliance, an urban-justice organization that produced the report as part of its Homes for All campaign. “Skyrocketing housing costs have met stagnant wages to effectively push affordable housing out of reach for millions, especially in low-income communities of color.”
