Supervisors join in opposition to Planet Ranch water deal

The La Paz County Board of Supervisors has approved joining with Mohave County in legal opposition to The Big Sandy River-Bill Williams River Water Rights Settlement Act of 2014.

The proposed legislation would codify an agreement between Freeport McMoRan, a Phoenix-based mining company, and several government entities. Freeport operates five copper mines in Arizona. They’ve reached an agreement with the Hualapai Indian Tribe, the federal government, and the Arizona Game & Fish Department that allows Freeport to continue pumping water from the Wikieup wells for use at their Bagdad copper mine.
