Candidates for 4 Pinal offices gather at ‘Dispatch’-sponsored forum

Legislative District 8

The need to secure additional state revenue was the primary topic of discussion among the incumbent Democrat and the three Republican challengers for the District 8 Arizona Senate seat during Thursday’s candidate forum hosted by the Casa Grande Dispatch.

Republicans Harold Vangilder, Irene Littleton and Alan Pease agreed that one of the best ways to generate revenue is to eliminate or reduce the state’s income and corporate taxes. Vangilder said reducing those tax rates would ease the burdens of single mothers, retirees and others who are struggling financially, and it would make Arizona a more appealing place for businesses to relocate and create jobs.

District 8’s two conservative Republican challengers went after the district’s two incumbent House members on the topics of Medicaid expansion and K-12 education during Thursday’s candidate forum hosted by the Casa Grande Dispatch.

Tea party favorites Darla Dawald and Wayne Bachmann said sitting House members Frank Pratt and T.J. Shope did a disservice to the state by voting for a Medicaid expansion bill last year that will secure $1.6 billion in federal funding. Dawald said Pratt and Shope, whom she called moderate Republicans who “keep blowing up our budget,” voted for the bill in exchange for special-interest payoffs, and she tied the vote to the issue of security along the Arizona-Mexico border.

Clerk of the Superior Court

The expansion of services throughout Pinal County was the primary topic of discussion between GOP rivals, incumbent Clerk of the Superior Court Chad Roche and challenger Amanda Stanford, at Thursday’s forum hosted by the Casa Grande Dispatch.

Stanford advocated the creation of secure automated systems throughout Pinal County, including more rural areas, to provide citizens with easier access to legal documents.

Justice of the Peace

Challenger John Ellsworth went on the offensive against incumbent Precinct 2 justice of the peace and fellow Republican Roger Valdez during Thursday’s candidate forum hosted by the Casa Grande Dispatch, accusing Valdez of doing a poor job of collecting fines.

“I think there’s a leadership failure to go after those unpaid funds, especially when you recently went back to the Board of Supervisors for more money … ,” Ellsworth told Valdez.
