Desert Carmel: Struggling subdivision may receive needed help

The process of transferring 2,800 lots in the Desert Carmel subdivision to a new owner has begun. Once it’s complete, the struggling community might finally have the cash to make major improvements.

The lots were for sale for several years and fell in and out of escrow a few times without a finalizing deal.

“It’s all water under the bridge now,” said Robert Itkin, a court-appointed receiver who oversees the Desert Carmel homeowners association.

The former owner of the 2,800 lots reportedly was not current on county property taxes. Tax liens for the lots were purchased by a land developer and the process of officially foreclosing on the property and transferring ownership has started, according to Itkin.

“It can take years,” Itkin said.
