Friends,

Last week, I let you know that the City is considering installing parking meters at Phoenix Mountain Parks including Echo Canyon and  Piestewa Peak

As you know, I strongly oppose this proposal which could cost avid park users hundreds of dollars a year. It is my pledge to you to keep you informed so that we can fight this together.

The first step the City will take is to bring the matter before the Parks Board this week. The Board will be meeting on Thursday, August 28th at 5:00 in the City Council Chambers. Anyone wishing to attend this meeting is welcome.

If you cannot attend the event, I encourage you to call or email my office prior to the meeting to register your opinion. We will be presenting this information at the meeting so the Board is aware of public sentiment on the issue. I also encourage you to pass this information on to your friends and family so their voices can be heard as well.

It is vitally important that this board be made aware of the feelings of Phoenix residents as it seems the board may take action without sending the matter before the full Council. I am strongly opposed to such a move. A matter like this must go before Council rather than be decided by an unelected board that is not accountable to the citizens.

My staff has been out at the parks distributing hundreds of flyers to park visitors to ensure that they are aware of a decision that will greatly affect them. I have attached a copy of the flyer hereIf you are visiting the parks, I encourage you to bring copies and let your fellow hikers know about the proposal and how they can help fight it.

Charging for the use of parks that you have already paid for with your taxes is simply wrong. Let’s work together to KEEP OUR PARKS FREE!

My best to you and your family,

Sal DiCiccio
