Diamondbacks Chief Baseball Officer Tony La Russa declined to speak with reporters Tuesday but said through a club spokesman that a USA TODAY report indicating the team was planning to retain manager Kirk Gibson was inaccurate.

The Arizona Republic sports reporter Nick Piecoro reported that through the spokesman, La Russa directed reporters to comments he made on Monday evening, when he said a decision would be coming sooner than later. He gave no indication Monday he had made a decision nor did he intimate what direction he might be leaning.

The report said the Diamondbacks “currently plan” to bring back Gibson for next season, but La Russa is “delaying any official announcement.”
