The question of whether Arizona Public Service is funding attack ads has dominated the discussion of the Republican primary for two open seats on the Arizona Corporation Commission.
That’s all the evidence necessary to conclude that APS is playing a very dumb political game. A smart regulated utility avoids, to the maximum extent possible, being the center of political attention, irrespective of the provocation. It figures out other ways to advance its interests.
The question of what APS is doing has overshadowed a development in the political thrust-and-parry that merits greater attention than it received. Both Lucy Mason and Vernon Parker called for the resignation of APS CEO Don Brandt over the dark-money allegations.
