Western multifamily permits climb in July

Western multifamily building permits echoed increases in overall residential permitting and climbed 27.7 percent in July over June. The increase to 106K permits topped last year’s 104K, and halts a three-month skid.

Nationally, multifamily permits were up 24.1 percent over June and 14.1 percent over 2013. While July was an above average month for the West, it was well below the 135K record number of permits issued in April 2014.

The permits for apartments of five and more units reflects heavily an overall uptick of 8.1 percent in residential construction for July. Single family permits for the month rose, but just 0.9 percent over June.
