I am pleased to share with you the Arizona State University charter and goals, “New American University – 2014 and Beyond.” During ASU’s evolution over more than a century – from a territorial teachers’ college to a state university – the opportunity for the adoption of a formal charter did not transpire. Now, with permission from the Arizona Board of Regents, ASU is transitioning from its longstanding vision statement to a permanent, defined charter dedicated to the advancement of inclusivity; the pursuit of use-inspired research for the public good; and the assumption of fundamental responsibility for the multi-faceted well-being of the communities it serves.

In addition to our first-ever charter statement, this document reiterates ASU’s established design aspirations and provides an updated list of institutional goals we are working to achieve in four key areas. Going forward, the ASU Charter will be increasingly visible as we incorporate it across the university and communicate it externally to facilitate understanding of ASU’s objectives, expand interest, and prompt engagement.

I invite you to review this new and meaningful development in ASU’s trajectory, and to share it with others who may find it helpful.

Thank you.

Michael M. Crow
