Equine industry urges Congress to protect Tennessee walking horses

HorseSupport for legislation that would put an end to the cruel training practice known as “soring” continues to grow among horse industry professionals and celebrities. Among the latest celebrities urging passage of the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, H.R. 1518/S. 1406, are wellness author Kathy Freston; TV personalities and actresses Maria Menounos, Torrey DeVitto, Bonnie-Jill Laflin, Fiona Gubelmann and Victoria Summer; and actor Michael Vartan.

The vast majority of the horse industry supports the PAST Act, now including the Illinois Walking Horse Association, two former Chief Riders of the Spanish Riding School—the most elite and longest lived school of classical dressage riding in the world—and horseman and noted international author, Dr. Werner Poscharnigg, who wrote “Milestones in Austrian Riding.”

The PAST Act would amend existing federal law to finally end soring and save the walking horse breed from a decades-long association with cruelty. The bill has the bipartisan support of 363 U.S. House and Senate cosponsors. The full endorsement list includes more than 600 groups and key individuals.
