Michael Mecham, the city’s assistant public works director, also is the subject of an investigation by the state department that regulates certifications for a variety of occupations. He will be paid at his annual salary rate of just under $116,000 until his resignation is effective Sept. 15.
Engineers who work for Arizona municipalities must pay required fees, pass an examination and be approved by the Arizona Department of Technical Registration as a Professional Engineer before they can practice in Arizona, according to state law.
The city of Surprise has seen a number of top officials resign in the last month.
