As the steady march of development makes Gilbert among the fastest growing communities in the nation, residents in one of the area’s many county islands recently won a compromise they hope will preserve their rural way of life.

Fired-up residents opposed making 172nd Street — a short, partially paved street without streetlights or sidewalks — a through road for motorists between San Tan Boulevard and Hunt Highway.

Town staff wanted to improve 172nd Street to ease traffic for Bordeaux, a housing development planned near the neighborhood.
