Lawmaker says recreational marijuana issue belongs in the Legislature

Legalizing marijuana for recreational use should not be a ballot issue, Rep. Ethan Orr tells the Yellow Sheet Report.

It’s expected a proposition to legalize the drug will be on the 2016 ballot as apparently enough signatures have been filed to do so.

Orr said the problem with passage of a voter-approved measure is it can’t be changed

and not the ideal way to set up a complicated regulation and taxation system for the drug.

“I would rather us, as elected leaders, be the ones directing the conversation and the debate, and ultimately control the policy, as opposed to letting it go to a citizens’ initiative where you can’t change the law once it’s in place…,” he told the political newsletter. “We need to take a serious look at our revenues, and that includes ideas that may be out of the box…”

Previous legislation to decriminalize possession of marijuana failed in Arizona.
